3 May 2009 - The tomato seeds are started in a flat of prepared starter soil. When they get this big, about 3" tall, they are 'hardened off' by putting them outside in a protected area. The temperature isn't as regulated as in the warm greenhouse, and the plant slowly gets used to the chill of night and warmth of the sun. Then they are finally planted in the field after about 5 days.
