26 Nov. 2005 - Our apples trees are a product of grafting two trees together. A strong root stock in grafted to a strong branching stock, thus producing a very productive apple tree. These dark leaves coming up from the bottom are root growth, and need to be pruned back. The apple that would be produced by these branches would be VERY different than the apples from the upper branches.
