Welcome to Homestead Farm

1991 Homestead Farm Giant Pumpkin Experience

(the carved pumpkin at right is just a small pumpkin carved — NOT the huge one)

We actually harvested the pumpkin purposely a bit too early, to make the entry date for the 1991 Montgomery County Fair in Gaithersburg, MD. In theory, if would have gotten about 6 more weeks of growth if we'd let it mature. Back then, huge pumpkins were pretty rare, so Farmer Ben's pumpkin won by a landslide... I'm sure the competition is tougher these days.

Ben started the seed in the greenhouse and hardened it off (got the young tender plant used to being outdoors) for several days before planting it in a special place in the field. He put it in a place where visitors seldom visit, so although the plant became enormous, it was bothered hardly at all. Very important. A mis-step onto one of the growing stems and PRESTO, the plant dies.

1991 big pumpkin Yes, it's oddly shaped, but most of the really huge pumpkins are. Also, most giant pumpkins have the stem off to the side - otherwise, it's easy for the plant to grow so fast that it actually pulls the roots from the ground. No, really! This pumpkin weighed in at 356 pounds.
We learned that manuvering a huge pumpkin is difficult. Grow your pumpkin on a padded pallet that can be lifted on and off trucks with a tractor... otherwise hernias may occur... or worse — you may DROP the pumpkin (they don't bounce well). lifting big pumpkin

Carving a giant Jack-O-Lantern can take some different tools... note the keyhole saw at left.

The 1991 farm dogs were Taz (top) and Nutmeg. Just like the current farm dogs, they love to be in the middle of things. Taz is sitting on a giant squash - seeds also from Dill's Atlantic Giants.
